and Return to Practice Programme (RtP)
formerly known as the GP Induction and Refresher (I&R) Scheme
The NHS GP International Induction Programme (IIP) and Return to Practice Programme (RtP) (formerly known as the GP Induction and Refresher (I&R) Scheme) are designed to provide a safe, supported and direct route for qualified GPs to join or return to the NHS General Practice.
The NHS GP International Induction Programme (IIP) provides a supported pathway for overseas qualified GPs to be inducted safely into NHS General Practice. For more information regarding the programme and application process please click here .
The NHS GP Return to Practice Programme (RtP) provides a safe, supported pathway for qualified GPs to return to NHS General Practice after an absence of more than 2 years. For more information regarding the programme and application process please click here .
The programme involves an MCQ assessment and a supervised clinical placement.

A placement supervision fee [at the rate of the Trainer’s Grant] is paid to the practice hosting our clinical placement. This Fee is not reduced pro-rata if the placement is part-time and it is claimable regardless of whether the trainer already has an ST1-3 in post. We are your first point of contact once your application has been accepted by the London Scheme Lead and we are happy to assist you through your journey on the GP I&R scheme. In particular we are involved in processing the results of your MCQ assessment, planning and organising your observational and clinical placement. You can also contact us with any concerns or queries related to the scheme process that you may have .

The GP NRO handles educational bursary and other claims related to financial support available for GP I&R doctors during their clinical placement, administration of MCQ assessments and will organise your free access to our learning resources including the Fourteen Fish and RCGP websites.

The NHS England North West team handles National Medical Performers’ List inquiries. They will also guide you through the DBS and occupational health checks, mandatory module certificates (classified as pre-employment checks which will need to be in place before the commencement of your supervised clinical placement). You can also contact them if you need guidance regarding application for Health and Care worker (former Tier 2) visa application.
