Paediatric Cardiology

ST4-ST7

Pan London and Oxford Paediatric Cardiology training programme

Core Training

Paediatric Cardiology training in London allows an unrivalled opportunity to train across three of the busiest cardiac surgical centres in the UK: Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, Evelina Children’s Hospital and The Royal Brompton Hospital. The trainee would typically rotate through at least two of these three units over the first three years gaining first rate experience in the core areas of paediatric cardiology- medical and surgical management of congenital heart disease and cardiac arrhythmias. Each unit has in-house educational programmes for trainees and all trainees are also expected to attend national teaching days organised throughout the year.

Subspecialty Training

In the ST7 and 8 years of training, the programme is structured so that trainees spend half of their time in a chosen subspecialty. All JRCPTB paediatric cardiology curriculum special interest options are available within the London deanery rotation, including:

  • Fetal cardiology,
  • Inherited cardiovascular disease,
  • Heart failure and transplant,
  • Intervention
  • Pulmonary Hypertension
  • Advanced imaging/MRI

Opportunities for Research

Many trainees take advantage of the active research programmes at these units to take time out of training to undertake a higher research degree, which is both encouraged and supported.

Rotations

There are a total of 13 approved training posts. 11 posts are designated for core training and two posts are subspecialty fetal posts available for ST7 and ST8 trainees from London and other UK training centres. One ST4 post each year is based at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. As a non-surgical unit, this post is designated for ST4 training only; the trainee will then rotate to one of the London centres from ST5 onwards.
