Educator role definitions

Educational supervisor (ES)

Responsible for the overall supervision and management of a GP resident doctor's educational progress during a placement or series of placements, for at least one year and sometimes for the full three years of the programme. Regularly meets with the GP resident doctor to help plan their training, review progress and achieve agreed learning outcomes.

Requirements:

• membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (or equivalent) - mandatory for GPs who joined the performers list before 2007
• membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners - not mandatory for those who joined the performers list after 2007
• must join a GP educational supervisor workshop (mandatory)
• complete the GP supervisors course or equivalent
• be approved and recognised as a GP educator (on the General Medical Council (GMC) recognised GP trainer published list)

Placement named clinical supervisor

Oversees the clinical experience of the trainee on a specific placement. Works within the same department or GP practice and oversees the clinical development of the trainee during that placement. When not directly supervising the trainee, ensures shift supervisors are cognisant of the responsibilities delegated to them (see GMC leadership and management section 63 Employment - professional standards - GMC).

Shift clinical supervisor

Purpose: Has delegated responsibility for supervision of a GP resident doctor in contact with patients on a shift. Every trainee must be responsible to a specific, clearly identified shift supervisor GP at all times on any shift (daytime and out of hours).

The clinical supervisor at the placement will delegate the responsibility to the shift supervisor. Shift supervisors must ensure they understand their delegated role and feedback to the clinical supervisor.

GMC standards

All GP educators must continuously demonstrate they meet the standards set out by the GMC recognition and approval of trainers process. This ensures high-quality training experiences for all learners.
