Obstetrics & Gynaecology

The surgical specialty treating any complications of pregnancy and childbirth and any that arise after the birth and  the care of women with problems of the female reproductive system (ovaries, tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina).

Maternal and foetal medicine

 

Reproductive medicine

 

Sexual and reproductive health

 

Urogynaecology

There is significant overlap with the requirements of other medical and surgical disciplines with regards to the subspecialties.

 

There is a requirement to function in an out-patient setting, on wards, in the operating theatre and on the labour ward / birthing centre. A high level of physical fitness and stamina is required.

Conditions that affect ability to stand for prolonged periods or adopt flexible postures may affect ability to practice.

 

Conditions affecting the spine, upper limbs including dexterity, and lower limbs are likely to impact on fitness to practice.

 

A high degree of physical strength is necessary and the ability to work in hot environments requires a stable cardiovascular system.

 

May present problems for doctors suffering from psychological conditions such as depression and anxiety.

 

May present difficulties for doctors with hand dermatitis/skin problems.
