Respiratory Medicine

Introduction

The Training Scheme in Respiratory Medicine offers a comprehensive and structured training programme for Specialist Registrars seeking the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). The training programme is intended for those doctors who have completed core training and who wish to achieve CCT in Respiratory Medicine (RM) and level 2 competency in General Internal Medicine (GIM). It consists of five years of training.

Training is based around both the experience gained from attachments and from a programme of training days. The latter have been designed to reflect the curriculum in Respiratory Medicine developed by the British Thoracic Society and ratified by the JRCPTB, whilst in addition allowing for continued experience in GIM. Each attachment provides experience in the core areas of RM and includes bronchoscopy, lung function interpretation and non-invasive ventilation. Out of Programme (OOP) experience to other centres may be arranged on an individual basis to provide experience in specialist areas not fully covered within individual programmes.

Vision

The vision for the Specialty School of Respiratory Medicine is:

•             World class education for world-class healthcare

•             Producing clinical leaders of tomorrow

Training programme

A PAN London STC manages appointments to the rotations and oversees quality of training. Once appointed trainees are allocated to a geographical London region (South London, North West and North Central and East London). Generally, they will remain in this region for the whole of their training and their supervision. When preferencing a sector / rotation, applicants should be prepared to train in all the trusts stated during the programme.

We provide training at world-renowned training institutions as well as a number of excellent district general hospitals. Working with a diverse healthcare population across London, trainees will treat a cross-range of patients and medical conditions in urban communities. London with its rich variety of cultures, nationalities and social backgrounds offers any trainee a full and rewarding experience in respiratory medicine.

The only predictable feature of our work is its total unpredictability. We work in fast moving, multidisciplinary teams that empower and develop all staff groups to enable them to deliver their best standards of care.
