Psychiatry

Introduction

The London Specialty School of Psychiatry, the geographically largest cohort of trainees, is responsible for the quality and commissioning of training in Psychiatry. Psychiatry has more than 450 trainees in core Psychiatry and more than 400 specialty trainees across General Adult, Older Adults, Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Intellectual Disabilities, Forensic Psychiatry and Medical Psychotherapy. London also offers opportunities for sub speciality training in Addictions, Liaison Psychiatry and Rehabilitation Psychiatry and hosts the largest cohort of academic trainees in the UK at its internationally renowned Universities.

Psychiatry is a fascinating, rewarding but also challenging career. We have strong established links to Undergraduate programmes, Foundation Schools and the RCPsych and this has helped us constantly to review and develop mental health training opportunities available across both hospital and community settings. The diversity of our trainees is a strength of our programmes and we need to continue to support and encourage international medical graduates.

As we are all very aware the landscape of the NHS is constantly changing and COVID has shown us all the need for flexibility and service response to clinical need. Supporting the mental health of both patients and staff has been a cornerstone of this and I am certain that Psychiatrists and other mental health professionals will play a key role in the recovery phase.

Trainee involvement is a cornerstone of the School ethos. All of the training programmes work closely with and respond to trainees. The trainees can also contribute to the London Psychiatry Trainees forum and the RCPsych Psychiatry Trainee Committee (PTC).

Head of School

Dr Vivienne Curtis is a committed Londoner, having been born, gone to school, trained and always worked in London. Clinically she works as a General adult Consultant Psychiatrist at SLAM where she leads the team at the Health Based Place of Safety

She has been the Head of School for Psychiatry since 2017 with oversight of all aspects of Postgraduate training in Psychiatry across the London Training programmes. She works closely with the RCPsych and has contributed to work on projects including credentialing, reviewing addictions training opportunities, understanding recruitment and retention issues and supporting the involvement of service users in medical education.

As Academic Associate Dean for London, since 2019, she has worked with academic trainees across all specialities, Higher Education Institutions, research funders and NIHR to support the largest cohort of NIHR funded trainees in England.
