Applying to become a GP educator

Below is a step-by-step guide to apply and become a GP educator.

Step-by-step process

Step 1: Complete your training

Complete the relevant course for your chosen educator role (GP supervisors course, shift supervisors course, or equivalent).

Step 2: Receive your application form

After completing your course, the quality team will contact you at england.gpquality.lase@nhs.net with an application form.

Step 3: Submit your application

Complete the application form within the requested timeframe and return it to england.WTELondonPrimaryCare@nhs.net.

Step 4: Panel review

NHS England forms a review panel to assess applications and approve educators.

Step 5: Learning environment approval (if required)

If your practice is not already an approved learning environment, you will also need to apply for approval. The quality team will make this clear to you. This must be completed before you can become an approved educator.

Step 6: Official notification

You will receive official notification from NHS England when you are approved. Do not presume you are approved once training is complete – you will not be an approved educator until officially notified.

Step 7: Learner allocation

The quality team notifies the healthcare education team who will assign learners to approved educators.
