Process for becoming a primary care educator

Requirements to become a primary care educator
To become an approved primary care educator in London, you will need to:
- have 1 to 2 years of postgraduate experience within your clinical profession (for multi-professional educators)
- have a minimum of 2 years post-CCT or equivalent (for GP educators)
- be employed in a substantive post within a learning environment
- be available to attend all course days and complete the relevant educator course
- be ready to begin the approval process soon after completing your course
- be ready to start supervising learners following your approval
Process to become a primary care educator
Becoming an educator is more straightforward than many expect. Read the guidance document (PDF only, 337KB) for a full overview of each step in the process.
- Contact your ICS facing hub (see below) to express your interest in applying for at scale learning environment or educator approval.
- Attend the relevant educator course.
- Along with other learning environments or educators in your locality, you will complete the application form (Word only, 240KB) and submit to your local training.
- Your local training hub or PCN checks the form for completeness.
- ICS facing training hub arrange and confirm the details of your at scale.
- Assessment panel takes place with the relevant panel members.
- Lead assessor informs the applicants of the panel outcome.
- Panel decision is ratified by either the Primary Care Dean or Head of School.
- NHSE‑London sends final approval confirmation to the ICS facing training hub and updates the relevant databases.
- GP educators are expected to attend a trainer workshop while they are preparing for approval and are encouraged to attend throughout their course. Once you are approved your development as an educator is continual with the support of your workshop and your patch associate director.
