GP and Public Health Dual Training

The General Practice (GP) and Public Health (PH) Dual Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) programme is a 7-year programme which integrates both GP and PH training into one training pathway.

This programme will ensure that you meet the requirements of both the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) to hold a Dual Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in both specialties.

The requirements of both specialties will need to be met, including successfully completing the RCGP and FPH postgraduate membership examinations and meeting the capabilities as outlined in the RCGP and FPH curricula.

There is a Dual GP and PH CCT curriculum to demonstrate where there is overlap between the RCGP and FPH curricula to aid with capability achievement during the programme.

During the course of the programme, you will complete a variety of placements such as:

  • primary care

  • PH placements

These placements will be integrated and carefully selected to ensure you can maintain capabilities in both specialties throughout the programme duration.

Educational supervision will be provided in both GP and PH to support you throughout the programme.

Delivery of the London Programme

The schools of GP and Public Health work together closely to oversee and deliver the London programme.

The London programme has been designed to ensure full integration of the two specialities. You will be placed within one borough for your GP and Public Health placements in ST1 and will remain in that borough for your GP practice for the duration of the seven years. Whereas for public health training, you will have the opportunity to work in other boroughs and local/national placements within London after ST1.

This will help you to translate your public health learning into your GP practice by working with one population.

Please note that the three boroughs supporting dual trainees are:

  • Bexley

  • Lambeth

  • Tower Hamlets

Please consider your commute when applying.

FAQs

Can I attend London PH training days during GP placements? Yes, with supervisor approval. Time should be balanced across both specialties and logged.

When should I open my Fourteen Fish/GP portfolio? At programme start. You can begin recording relevant competencies during PH posts.

Is there a national contact for the dual programme? No national programme exists—please raise concerns locally via supervisors or Lara Hogan.

Will there be a dual training rep? We’re exploring this—let us know if you're interested.

When are ARCPs held? One joint ARCP takes place annually in June/July. Notify us if told otherwise.

Can I pay reduced membership fees if training less than full-time? Yes—contact the RCGP and FPH directly.

Can I train less than full-time? Yes, with approval from both schools. Please provide four months’ notice.

Do I need to finish PH exams by ST5? Exam timing is flexible, but it's recommended to take the Diplomate exam after your Master's, as it helps prepare you. Aim to complete the Membership exam by the end of ST5 to access a wider range of public health placements.

Can I meet PH outcomes in a 6-month local authority post?  It’s very common that you will not see some pieces of work through to their conclusion but work with your ES to find appropriate work that you will be able to fully achieve a couple of Learning Outcomes and some partials. You will be permitted to return for very short periods e.g. for a meeting or two to wrap up the work but will not be able to return for an extended period during ST1.

Can I change boroughs after ST1/ST2? The programme is designed to ensure trainees translate their public health learning into one population which will support them in their career following training. For this reason, you will be supported to remain in one borough for the duration of your training and have a home base GP practice.

Is a secondary care placement possible? This is not built in. However, the programme can be tailored to your learning needs. As your learning progresses, you may find that a particular secondary care may benefit you and you can talk to your TPD or to one of us about that. You can also do Public Health placement at a trust, as we have several trusts listed as training locations.

When is the health protection induction? To be confirmed.
