Public Health Practitioner Development
Public Health Practitioner Development
Public health practitioners are key members of the public health workforce. They can have a great influence on the health and well-being of individuals, groups, communities and populations. Working across the full breadth of public health in a wide range of settings, from the NHS and local government to the voluntary, and private sectors, they work on a range of public health programmes and interventions, including health improvement, health protection, health information, screening and immunisation (or healthcare public health), community development and nutrition.
Public Health Practitioner Registration
The Public Health Practitioner Registration Scheme offers a support programme for individuals to develop their portfolio for registration with the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR). The London scheme runs annually and is completed over the course of 12 months. If you are interested in applying to the next London scheme, please email england.publichealthlondon@nhs.net for further information about the scheme and other practitioner development opportunities.
More information about registration can be found in this short e-learning overview. It will give you an understanding of practitioner registration, the process of portfolio completion and submission for registration and next steps. Please note you will need to set-up an account and wait for the invitation to access the e-learning from UKPHR.
London Public Health Practitioner Network
You can also join the London Practitioner Network KHub group. Our Network aims to bring the practitioners in London together to share, collaborate and learn, and we regularly host events online and in-person with learning and networking opportunities and to grow and strengthen the practitioner level of practice.

The Public Health Practitioner Apprenticeship
The Public Health Practitioner Level 6 (L6 PHP) Apprenticeship is a 36-month integrated degree programme, approved by the Institute of Apprenticeships and Technical Education. This is an opportunity for anyone interested in promoting, improving and protecting health to gain a BSc Public Health (Hons) degree and pursue public health practitioner registration with UKPHR. The practice-focussed nature of the course will empower students to work independently and collaboratively and thrive as part of a team of public health professionals. The programme also instils the importance of maintaining academic and professional ethical standards, expected by employers, academic institutions, and the public health profession.
Currently, those wishing to pursue this route will need to seek organisations advertising the opportunity directly.
You can find further information on the ADPH website
We are currently exploring options for a London wide approach to this apprenticeship, aimed at supporting employers and any further details will be shared as and when.
