Introduction

Welcome to the London School of Psychiatry website. I have been Head of School since June 2017 and am delighted to be helping to guide the geographically largest group of Psychiatry trainees in the UK.

I am a committed Londoner, having been born in London, gone to school in London, trained in medicine at Guys and St Thomas's and completed my postgraduate training in General Adult Psychiatry at the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust. As a Consultant I have always worked in acute settings, firstly leading a single sex inpatient unit and recently moving to the health based Place of Safety at SLAM.

Throughout my career I have been involved in medical education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and was the Training Programme Director for the General Adult Higher training scheme at SLAM for almost 10 years. I am an advocate of academic training and have also been the academic TPD for Psychiatry trainees at SLAM/IoPPN, helped to organise the pan speciality KCL programme and am an elected member of the RCPsych Academic Faculty executive.

I have taken on this role at a time of both uncertainty and optimism for the NHS.  Psychiatry is a fascinating, rewarding but also challenging career. I plan to strengthen links between the School of Psychiatry and Undergraduate programmes, Foundation Schools and the RCPsych to maximise the mental health training opportunities available across both hospital and community settings. The diversity of our trainees is a strength of our programmes and we need to continue to support and encourage international medical graduates.  The landscape of the NHS is constantly changing and mental health provision is the subject of major review and transformation.  I will be working with the team at HEE to ensure that training develops alongside these changes. Finally,  mental health has a higher media profile than ever before and we need to engage with this to inform public understanding and reduce stigma.

Trainee involvement is a cornerstone of the School ethos and I am pleased that we have an active London Psychiatry Trainees committee and that we have regular HEE based regional training days. I look forward to meeting you at one of these very soon.

Specialty units / Specialty areas in London information

Psychiatry is a vital and competitive specialty that evolves with the latest advances in medical technology. We provide training at world-renowned training institutions including the Tavistock and Portman and Institute of Psychiatry, alongside a number of excellent district general hospitals and specialist units including Broadmoor. Working with a diverse healthcare population across London, trainees will treat a cross-range of patients and medical conditions in urban communities.

Specialty Advisory Group or Pan London Forum information

The London Specialty School of Psychiatry holds Specialty Advisory Group (SAG) / Pan London Forum meetings three times per year. The purpose of this group is to bring together specialty leads from postgraduate medical training programmes across the three London local education and training board areas to consider issues of mutual interest in relation to Psychiatry training, and to foster and share good practice.
