This range of online workshops cover a variety of themes around performance and wellbeing transitions within training from utilising CBT approaches to avoid burnout to personal and professional effectiveness for stepping up into senior roles and much more.

CBT approaches to help prevent burnout- 6 week course for trainees

A 6 session weekly course starting Thursday 23rd March @ 6.30pm (online)

This 6 week online early evening course will be a safe, confidential space for doctors and dentists in training to learn about the thoughts and behaviours that can contribute to burnout and develop different skills which can help reduce the likelihood of burnout. Each week will focus on a different topic and will include introduction to relevant psychoeducation and CBT theories and frameworks as well as allowing time for discussions.

The first and last session will be 90 minutes long and all others will last 1 hour. All sessions start at 6:30pm and signup is for all 6 sessions.  You will be sent joining instructions after registration nearer the start of the course.

Learning Objectives:

1) 23/03/23 Introduction to burnout; what it is. Using the Maslach score. Sleep, self-care and fatigue.

2) 30/03/23 Values and boundaries; living by our inner compass and how to set and maintain boundaries.

3) 6/04/23 Thought biases; negative thinking and the effects. Learning to recognise your critical thoughts and challenge them. 

4) 13/04/23 Managing our emotions; the relationship between how we think and feel and how that affects us.

5) 20/04/23 Introduction to perfectionism; what does it mean to be perfectionist? 

6) 27/04/23 Imposter syndrome; valuing ourselves and reflection on the course

Compassionate & inclusive leadership: developing lifelong leadership skills

The NHS long-term plan sets out a national vision for leadership that is both compassionate and diverse. In order for us to sustain inclusive cultures, we need to understand the skills and behaviours of compassionate and inclusive leadership. This will enable us to develop approaches to ensure we are all working at an individual and team level to promote leadership that has equity and compassion at the heart of it.

Coping with uncertainty and anxiety- practical skills for health professionals using a CBT approach

In this workshop participants will be introduced to practical skills for making sense of and coping with uncertainty, worry and anxiety, using Cognitive Behavioral princinples and techniques.

The facilitator is will be Dr Lee David, an experienced GP, CBT therapist and CBT trainer with significant experience of working with and supporting health care professionals experiencing mental health difficulties.

# Understanding the impact of uncertainty in health care on clinicians and patients 

# Use a CBT framework (5 areas model) for understanding links between anxiety and uncertainty

# Discover how anxious thinking styles and behaviours and can influence our practice and wellbeing

# Introduce the ACCEPTS and ABLE models for coping with uncertainty

# Explore how a three circles model can help to balance our emotional systems (threat, drive and self-care)

Introduction to Professional Boundaries for Trainees

Help to set and maintain professional boundaries.  This course provides guidance on setting and maintaining boundaries and remaining within safe limits. This one-day course is for those new to professional boundaries or needing a refresher. The course covers the fundamentals of boundary theory and practice, introducing participants to the core knowledge from experience, from research and the literature.

The session will include core concepts on boundaries, including Purpose, Concepts, Definitions, Power & Vulnerability, Self-Disclosure, Sexual attraction, Dual Relationships, Touch.

Stepping Up: Personal & Professional Effectiveness for senior roles

Using Positive Intelligence to manage stressful situations

This half-day virtually-facilitated workshop is targeted at postgraduate doctors and dentists in training experiencing increased levels of stress and/or anxiety at key transition points in their career.  The workshop is drawn from the evidence-based neuroscience and positive psychology of effective transformational change developed by Shirzad Chamine and his Positive Intelligence team. 

Learning Objectives

  • Learn how to intercept and disrupt unhelpful negative thinking, rumination, procrastination, excessive worry, limiting beliefs
  • Learn simple and effective strategies that can be used in real time increasing your self-awareness, self-regulation, focused attention and ability to make effective decisions that can have a positive impact on your performance, stress management, and overall wellbeing.
  • Learn how to strengthen existing mental muscles and build new ones and support greater focus, empathy, adaptability, creativity, motivation and taking positive forward action
  • You will have the opportunity to try simple quick techniques that can help increase your mental bandwidth, cognitive load and help futureproof your mental & physical health

Making sense of complaints

Friday 21st  April 9.00am-12.30pm

This safe and confidential half-day workshop is targeted to all post graduate doctors and dentists in training who have experienced the stress of a complaint or significant event. Complaints are an increasing feature of day to day work in the NHS and we can be better prepared, both in terms of reducing the risk and managing the impact when they occur.

The workshop will allow space for reflection, and for normalising challenging experiences. We will consider what it means to be vulnerable in practice, let go of our inner perfectionist, and learn to see vulnerability as a strength. The workshop will involve breakout rooms and feedback and will be highly participative and supportive. 

The workshop will be facilitated by a highly experienced clinician, coach, supervisor and facilitator working in the NHS.

2) To provide a space for reflection 

3) To consider healthy, constructive approaches in the light of a complaint
