Learner (Rater) FAQs

You may have been nominated by your current/previous supervisor to provide feedback via the MSF Tool for Supervisors. Below are some FAQs which will provide you with further information about the process.

Why has my supervisor sent me an email asking me to provide feedback?

Your supervisor has registered to use the HEE Multisource Feedback Tool for Supervisors and as part of this process they have nominated you as a rater as your supervisor would like to receive feedback from you on their skills as a supervisor. A total of 5 learners would have been nominated by your supervisor.

What is the Multisource Feedback Tool for Supervisors?

More information can be found here https://supervisormsf.hee.nhs.uk/supervisor, but essentially it’s a free, online tool which allows supervisors to receive anonymous feedback directly from their learners on the quality of the supervision they provide.  Your supervisor will not know who has provided which feedback.  Once you and the other learners have completed the feedback questionnaire, your supervisor will be sent an anonymised PDF feedback report. Your supervisor would have also completed the feedback questionnaire as a self-assessment.

Can I see the final feedback report that is sent to the supervisor?

No. The report will only be sent to your supervisor and is confidential to them. They will be encouraged to use this feedback in their appraisal and to inform their professional development as a supervisor.  We therefore appreciate your time in providing them with the feedback.

Will the supervisor know that the feedback is from me?

No, as mentioned above the tool is anonymous. The report collates all the feedback separately, without stating who the feedback is from. An example of a feedback report can be found here https://london.hee.nhs.uk/example-multisource-feedback-report-final. However, due to the small numbers of learners providing feedback, if possible, it is best to avoid writing specific information in your feedback comments that could identify you as the rater.

What are the benefits for me?

There are several benefits for you in participating in the MSF Tool process, namely:

  • It provides you with an opportunity to reflect on how supervision helps you
  • It can form evidence of your participation in quality assurance systems - as required by your healthcare regulator
  • It provides you with a useful means of considering approaches to supervision styles in the context of your own future personal development.

OK, what do I do now?

The email you received has full information but essentially you will need to access the MSF tool and follow the prompts to complete the feedback questionnaire. Providing feedback as a rater is entirely voluntary and you are not mandated to do so if you feel unable to do so.  As part of the rater registration, you are offered the option to decline to provide feedback for a variety of reasons and we would ask that you use this facility to decline if this is your preference.  The online Assessment Service does send out email reminders to anyone who has not responded, so it is helpful to everyone that you identify that you do not wish to provide feedback.  Please be assured, the Supervisor going through the assessment will not know whether you have provided feedback or declined to do so.
