Introduction to neurodiversity

This online workshop, delivered by an Occupational Psychologist involved in the assessment and support of neurodivergent adults, is suitable for anyone wishing to develop their awareness and understanding of neurodiversity in relation to work or training.

Neurodiversity refers to the different ways the brain can work and interpret information. It highlights that people naturally think about things differently. We have different interests and motivations, and we are naturally better at some things than others.

It is estimated that around 1 in 7 people (around 15-20% of people in the UK) are neurodivergent, meaning that their brain functions, learns and processes information differently.  Neurotypes include Dyslexia and DCD/Dyspraxia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism.  You can click here to watch a short clip about Neurodiversity.

Learning objectives

During the workshops we will explore:

What neurodivergence refers to and the use of definitions and language related to neurodivergence.

Consider the overlaps and commonalities that may help someone spot neurodivergence in the work or learning environment.

What can be done to support neurodivergent trainees in reaching their potential.

Skills which may help you develop better rapport and relationships with those within the neurominority community.

After the training, you will be provided with a reading list that contains books and publications to help you stay up-to-date with recent developments in the field of Neurodiversity. You will also be sent the session slides in PDF.
