JOINING AN INDEMNITY ORGANISATION

In terms of preparing for practising medicine and the risks it can involve, GMC states that:

You must make sure that you have adequate and appropriate insurance or indemnity arrangements in place covering the full scope of your medical practice in the UK. The cover you need is very much dependent on your circumstances and must be in place by the time you begin to practise. For advice on the cover you need, speak to a medical defence organisation or another professional insurance or indemnity provider.

The GMC have listed the three main Medical Defence organisations in the UK - (https://www.gmc-uk.org/ethical-guidance/ethical-hub/covid-19-questions-and-answers/medical-defence-bodies).

The Medical Defence organisations advise doctors that when they are involved in writing any formal statement, to ensure that the report is a clear, factual and provides a detailed account of events.

Ask your colleagues which defence organisation they have joined.

The BMA has a very helpful webpage explaining trainee indemnity https://www.bma.org.uk/advice-and-support/medical-indemnity/medical-indemnity/gp-trainee-indemnity
