One-to-one support 

At times, speaking confidentially with someone who is trained in offering support or guidance can be particularly useful.  Depending on your needs and preferences you can access different forms of free and confidential one-to-one support via the PSU.

URGENT or IMMEDIATE mental health support in a crisis during the COVID-19 pandemic:

We do not offer urgent psychological support in a crisis but you can can access free & confidential psychological or mental health support 24/7 via:

  • The NHS Frontline service for all NHS staff: Call 0300 131 7000  (between 7am-11pm) or Text 'FRONTLINE' to 85258 (24hrs/day)
  • NHS Bereavement & Loss Helpline for NHS staff: Call 0300 303 4434 (between 7am-11pm)
  • The BMA's 24/7 counselling service for all doctors (including non BMA members): Call 0330 123 1245 or visit The BMA
  • The Samaritans: Call 116 123 or visit Samaritans 
  • The Practitioner Support Programme's crisis line: Text NHSPH to 85258 or visit Practitioner Health

Single Point of Contact (SPOC) support with difficulties during COVID-19 outbreak

What are SPOC appointments?

  • A confidential appointment with a senior adviser from within the PSU to discuss any difficulties or dilemmas you currently face
  • Details of what you share in the SPOC appointment won't be discussed with member of your team or training programme
  • Appointments usually last upto 45mins & are availble by phone or virtual platforms (eg Zoom/MS Teams)
  • Most appointments will be offered within1 week but for more pressing or urgent issues we will aim to offer you an apointment within 2 working days if you request this.
  • A SPOC appointment may be suitable if you:
    • want a neutral, safe & private space just to talk freely about a difficult experience you have had or are facing
    • are feeling worried, overwhelmed, stressed or finding it hard to cope at work
    • want guidance about what support may be most helpful
    • want signposting to other resources (within the PSU or externally)
    • want help with finding a useful way forward in your current situation

Practitioner Health Programme (PHP)/Trainee Doctors & Dentist Support Service (TDDSS)
  • The Trainee Doctors & Dentist Support Service (TDDSS) is a psychoeducation and support service which aims to offer a range of interventions to support trainees on programmes managed by HEE Local Offices in London & the South East.

Coaching Support
  • Confidential 1:1 session with a trained professinoal coach from the PSU Coaching Service
  • Coaching can be helpful if you want to
    • identify strategies to address a specific challenge you face in your professional life
    • boost your performance
    • improve your self-confidence in the workplace
    • maximise your effectiveness
    • change certain behaviours to be more effective in your role

Careers Advice
  • A confidential 1:1 discussion with a careers advisor
  • A session with a careers advisor can be helpful if you
    • are considering a change in career or are unsure of the career opportunities may be available to you
    • want help in planning and developing your career
    • are considering leaving your current career but would like a space to talk confidentially about that so that you can plan the transition

Individual Support Team
  • A confidential & independent 1:1 conversation with a senior member of the PSU team
  • Suitable if you
    • are facing complex issues which may impact your ability to train or work 
    • facing multiple difficulties and unsure of how to tackle them
    • have failed exams or are worried you may do without additional support
    • think you may have dyslexia
    • are experiencing difficulties with your team or a colleague at work
    • are facing difficulties in your personal life which may affect your ability to work
    • are experiencing physical or psychological difficulties which is affecting your ability to work

Specialist Clinical Communication and Linguistic Support
  • A safe, private & confidential session with trained language specialist and an actor
  • Suitable if you
    • would like to develop a specific aspect of your language, communication or consulting at work
    • would like to improve your comunication with patients or colleagues around in certain situations
    • have had specific feedback around a particular aspect of communication or language which you would like to address

Supported Return to Training (SRTT)
  • The London & Kent, Surrey and Sussex Supported Return to Training (SuppoRTT) programme aims to support all trainees to safely and confidently return to training after a sustained period of absence. As returning trainees are a diverse group, SuppoRTT aims to provide a bespoke, individualised package for each returning trainee, rather than a single “one size fits all” approach.
